The game rules and almanac booklet sets out four pages of guidelines for getting started. Don't worry, the rules are straightforward and the four pages include plenty of illustrations. There's a starting map that shows a well-balanced set-up for beginners to follow and directions that allow more advanced players to lay out the map of the island at random. You'll have to pop the die-cut components of the game out of their cardboard holders before you play your first game.

The almanac portion of the booklet is laid out alphabetically, so while playing you can find answers to specific questions quickly. Useful entries remind you exactly what role pieces like the robber play, how actions like maritime trade work, and how to set up the board or finish the game.

Exploring and Developing Catan
The board consists of 19 terrain hexes surrounded by the ocean. Each type of terrain produces a different type of resource: brick, wool, ore, grain or lumber. There's also a desert hex that produces no resources. As the game progresses, players use resources to build roads along the edges of these hexes and settlements or cities on the intersections where three hexes meet. Each player begins the game with two settlements and two roads.

Each player's roll of the dice causes certain hexes to produce resources, which you collect if you have a settlement on one of them. On your turn, you'll use various combinations of the resources you've acquired to build new roads and settlements, upgrade settlements to cities, or purchase development cards. The ability to trade resources with other players adds a new level of strategy and ensures that the game includes lots of interaction between players. You can also trade without worrying about other players using an unfavorable maritime trade rate. Elements including a robber piece that lets you steal from other players and a variety of development cards add intrigue to the game.

The objective of The Settlers of Catan is to be the first one who collects 10 victory points. Each settlement is worth one victory point and each city is worth two victory points. You can also earn victory points by holding the "Longest Road" card, the "Largest Army" card, or special victory point development cards.

It's easy to see why The Settlers of Catan has been recognized as a best-selling Game of the Year in both Germany and the U. S. We found this game to be fun and engaging for both children and adults, and the variable nature of the playing field really made us want to play again and again. When we started pausing to contemplate our opponents' strategy and factoring the probability of different dice rolls into our moves, the game sometimes took longer than expected, but we were so engrossed we didn't even notice until it was all over.

Due to the widespread popularity of the original game, several expansion sets (sold separately) are available that allow you to explore new aspects of the game or add more players. The only downside to this game is that you need to have either three or four players to play, so it's great that expansion sets are available that will allow you to add players.

I bought this bunny for my daughter for this upcoming Easter present for her basket. It is so cute in person, the photo does nothing for it. It's so soft and cuddly, she is going to love it. I originally bought this keychain for a friend but decided to keep it. This keychain is for "Twilight" fans and the pieces symbolize the images displayed in the "Twilight" movie and book franchise. Overall, this is not a very sturdy keychain (so it should not be placed on a backpack, for instance, because a piece would break off easily). The little pieces are only colored beautifully on one side and are hollow on the opposite side. For the price, you get what you pay for though. One surprising thing to note, however, is that the image does not display how large the item is which is even better for advertising your love of this book/movie! I am absolutely in love with the series and cannot wait for the movie to come out, and this keychain makes the perfect gift for any "Twilight" fan.

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo I just finished reading this one out loud to my daughter (5 years old) and it was a HUGE hit, even though I think it was really meant for older kids who can read it on their own. It is the story of a lonely little mouse, rejected by his family, who falls in love with the young Princess who rules the castles in which he lives.

Here are some reasons we really liked the book:

1) DiCamillo is a true romantic; Despereaux the mouse loves Pea the Princess with a love that is overwhelming and courtly (like a medieval knight), a love that makes him want to be a better person. At the same time, the author is not afraid to toss in some real Adventure and even Peril - the mouse must brave the dungeon, its murderous clan of rats, and a sad but frightening orphan girl named Miggery Sow who means to kidnap the princess and take her place. Scary enough to be exciting but not scary enough for nightmares.

2) Although DiCamillo's writing style is highly sophisticated, she stops along the way to explain the unusual and interesting words she uses ("perfidy," for one), so the book is comprehensible even to kids too young to read it themselves.

3) The illustrations are charming and many, to keep younger listeners/readers entertained. The chapters are also short enough to make good bed-time stories by themselves.

One caution though - although my 9-year-old son would have been able to tackle this on his own, the heavy romantic nature of the story (even though it's between a mouse and a girl) put him off. It's probably a much more appealing book to girls than boys. But even for some boys, the adventure will make it worth the while.

My son has to really think about hitting the nails and turning the wrench and screwdriver, but he can do it. This set looks real and my son loves that. If he sees his daddy using tools he will go get his tools so he can help. Some kids might get frustrated with it, but I think that it's teaching fine motor skills.

I picked this up here for $3.90. I don't play Halo or know much about it, but I like McFarlane's figures. I liked the way this one looked in the picture, and it was cheap. So now I have one.

The figure is well-articulated. Lots of joints and they all seem to work. The figure poses well, stands well, etc. I suppose too much force would break something, but it's good so far.

The Rogue comes with some sort of assault rifle /sword combo and a grenade. The hanger grip on the front of the rifle broke the first time I tried it. Thin plastic. Probably needed to be metal wire. That's the only quality glitch. The grenade has a separate, small, black pin that should allow the grenade to plug into the figure for storage. I can't find a hole in the figure that will hold the pin. Also, the grenade is tiny. I think it's only a matter of time before I lose the thing. No matter.

The figure is nicely painted. He is pale green with red markings and black trim.His eye panel is a metallic gold. The weapon is dark green, gunmetal, and dull silver. The figure has a weathered appearance. Looks good.

The package says the head, shoulder armor, and chest armor are removable. It allows you to exchange parts between figures. I pulled off the head and shoulder plates to see if this was true. Nothing broke, but doing that seems like a bad idea. The head has a plastic ball joint in it. The ball could break off or the socket could be stretched. The shoulder plates could be lost. I don't like the idea. So I put the parts back, and that's where they'll stay.

The grenade seems unnecessary and the hanger grip broke off the rifle. Oh, well. It's still excellent for the price and gets 5 stars.

No Assembly Required for i-Dog to Get His Groove On
The i-Dog Dance requires no assembly and is ready to use right out of the box. Simply press the button on i-Dog's nose and he'll tell you what "mood" he's in through a series of noises and light displays.

The clever, compact design features a jack on his hind leg where you can plug in a personal music player using the included connector cord. As the music plays through i-Dog's speaker, he'll do a custom light show, and occasionally dance along. The little speakers on i-Dog get plenty loud, but you can quickly mute them by touching i-Dog's multi-functional tail (which also puts him into "quiet" mode if he's getting on your nerves.)

The inconspicuous microphone on his shoulder also allows him to perform along with music that's played through nearby speakers. Besides dancing and flashing his lights while listening to music, the dog also responds to a variety of commands. These commands are all described in the helpful instruction booklet.

Plugged or Unplugged, i-Dog is a Dancin' Fool
The design of the i-Dog Dance makes it a standout. It's both sleek and contemporary while still remaining cute and charming. The multi-colored light shows are fun, as are the dog's movements--especially when he moves his ears up and down and dances on his back legs (which you can make him do by running your finger across his face). His versatility is also a nice feature --when you don't feel like plugging a personal music player in to i-Dog, simply put him next to your stereo and watch him perform!

Fun Personality, User-Friendly Design
We especially liked how i-Dog has a personality and reminds you of his presence when you haven't paid attention to him in a while. (It's easy enough to turn him off if he's annoying you). The device also functions as a compact easy-to-use speaker system for your personal music player--handy for a desk or a kitchen table.

Theoretically you can control the volume of i-Dog's speakers by running your finger up and down his face, but that feature didn't work so well for us. Most likely, however, your personal music player will be sitting nearby, and you can easily control the volume directly from it. This minor flaw didn't prevent us from enjoying i-Dog and his antics, and appreciating the clever, user-friendly design that's sure to appeal to dog-lovers and music-lovers alike.

With the camera's ergonomically shaped handle in one hand, you can focus on any number of everyday objects--such as coins, fabric, your pet's fur, or your own hair and skin. Get Ready to Show off Your Child's Photos
It's clear right out of the packaging that this camera was designed to stand up to tough play and rough handling. Bright pink rubber grips on each side make it easy for children to grasp the camera with both hands, and two-eye viewing make it easy to conceptualize a photo or a cool video. The camera even comes with two interchangeable faceplates, so your child can pick her favorite look.

Before your child starts taking photos, you'll need to use a Phillips screwdriver to insert four "AA" batteries in the grips of the camera. Heirloom Quality

This castle is amazing in detail and quality. The working drawbridge is weighted and has metal details. Each tower has two floors above the ground floor, so soldiers can stage battles from higher angles. The castle comes with two towers, main entrance with drawbridge, four long walls, and two short walls. The pieces may be moved around and rearranged in whatever configurations you wish.

This is a heavy castle, with all the pieces collectively weighing in at approximately 20 lbs. It is also a BIG castle, with towers reaching almost 18" height. While it seems incredibly sturdy, I would recommend children be at least 5 years old before receiving such a gift; they need to be at least strong enough to lift the towers, and coordinated enough to avoid knocking it over onto themselves. Even then, I'd guess it is best suited for children 7-13, and I hope it will be treasured by my son throughout his childhood, and passed on to his children some day.

There are other websites that sell Schleich World of Knights, and have a more comprehensive collection than what is shown here (not to mention better prices if you farm around). Some additional pieces not shown on Amazon include: stone steps and ladders, which let soldiers reach the ledges behind the walls of the castle and the 2nd and 3rd floors of the towers; additional short walls, long walls, and towers; catapult; war tent; an Arabian Knights collection; a Crusaders collection; and additional mythical characters such as a fairy, elf, pegasus, and phoenix. Beware the female characters: they have homely, masculine faces, and sort of look like drag queens.

Most of the figures themselves are a single molded piece, and are beautifully detailed with things like the quilted underside of the blankets on the princes' horses, silver painted horseshoes, dirt on the faces of the soldiers, an occasional bloodied knuckle, etc. A few soldiers have long-handled weapons which are removable, as are the jousting sticks used by the tournament knights. Also, the mounted figures are removable from their horses, though their legs remain bowed.

The castle arrives in a sturdy cardboard box with a built-in carrying handle, and is attractive enough that gift wrapping isn't necessary. This is a decidedly masculine toy; a boys' equivalent to a high-end doll house for girls. It is also a toy to be added to over time -- with all the accessories, this toy will stay exciting and provide new adventures for years to come.

UPDATE (Oct '08): It's been over 3 years since my son got his castle. It still looks perfect, and he still loves to stage battles with his knights.

stickers easy to replace, range of quality with all similar cubes
I'm an avid cuber, can easily solve it in under 30 seconds, and have been cubing since 1981, so I know what I'm talking about here, and wanted to respond to a couple of the comments.

First, the stickers. ALL the currently mass-produced cubes have stickers of the same very low quality. With even moderate use, these stickers will start to peel, usually starting with orange. The stickers are very easy to replace, and replacement stickers that are high quality and don't peel are widely available at a cost of about a buck for a complete set. For a casual cuber, just replacing the stickers once with high quality stickers should turn this into a very durable toy.

Where to get replacement stickers? The official page for Rubik's has replacement stickers that are low quality and what they call "PVC stickers" which are much better quality ($5 for 3 sets), and cubesmith, which only stocks the high quality non-peeling variety for $1.25 per complete set.

Second, with respect to the ease of turning, there is (unfortunately) a wide range of quality for these mass produced cubes when you first pull them out of the box. Many turn very smoothly right out of the box, but some are extremely stiff. ALL of them, however, will break in eventually and will get better with even a little bit of use, and (except for the stickers) Rubik's cubes almost never wear out (I still have the first one I bought in 1981). That makes this an incredible deal!

There is no way to tell the smooth cubes without opening the package and trying them out. Still, nearly any of these mass produced cubes that carry the official Rubik's logo will be good enough for the casual user. Knock-off cubes that you see from time to time are generally absolutely terrible when it comes to turning smoothly and wearing out quickly.

If you do get a cube that is stiff, keep playing with it and it will loosen up as it breaks in. It is also very helpful to spray a little lubricant into the cracks (a pure silicon based lubricant works best though even WD40 works in a pinch and should be more than adequate for a casual cuber).

Bottom line, the Rubik's Cube is an incredible puzzle--easily one of the most widely recognized objects around the world, and offers hours of enjoyment for about $10 or less. You can take it anywhere. Having one on your desk or playing with one in public is almost guaranteed to start a conversation. It's an icon of the 80s, but has had a huge resurgence in this decade. Also, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to solve it, and there are plenty of helpful websites for beginners who get stuck.

This cube is a good option for a beginner or casual cuber, but if you evolve into a serious cuber, there are better (and more expensive) options out there.

Excellent choice over Creepy Crawlers

Very impressed w/ this toy. Concept is similar to Creepy Crawlers w/out the hassel of electricity (heat,danger,and time to cook) or odor. Martian Matter is quick, easy, odor free, not messy, and end results/variety is excellent and brightly colored. Each Martian sets firm in just 5 minutes. The clay in which you make an impression mold is soft and fluffy-not hard to manage or crumbly. I wish I had bought several of these around Christmas! It would have been great for a secret santa or white elephant type of gift exchange. Everyone loved the affirmation ball, and my whole family was cracking up at the "answers" everyone got. And since it isn't in stores (at least, none that I've seen) it was a unique gift that no one else had ever seen. Lots of fun, especially for the price!

Classic Fun
This is a classic fun game. We've always enjoyed this, and we've revised the rules for the toddlers to play. When we play with the toddlers, we simply go in order of the scorecard (ex: our first roll is to get as many one's as possible, then we write the amount on the scorecard).

Sometimes for a little variety, when playing with adults, we revise the rules again. We've taken one scorecard and played "blackout," where we finish the entire scorecard and make it one game; we've played it the same as we play with the toddlers or young childred listed above; and we've played it the normal way.

My son grabbed this little guy right off of the shelf in the store. Surrounded by so many flashier (and more expensive) items, little Pablo caught my two year old's attention. Backyardigans is a great series for children ~ even my ten year old will sit with his little brother to watch along! Our Pablo has been through quite a bit including trips through the washer and dryer yet he still looks almost as nice as the day that we bought him. Durability in a toy, especially a stuffed animal, is very important to young children who may get very attached to it. So go ahead, spend a couple of bucks knowing that your little one will dance around with Pablo while watching his favorite show ~ AND that you can send Pablo to the laundry if he should become too disgusting!

As a GenX, I grew up with Battleship and Electronic Battleship (cooler). Its a great game for young kids. 5 or 6 is about as young as you want to go on age. The kids have to learn both grid notation and also the transformation that their attack grid is an analog to my defense grip/ship grid and vice versa. It takes kids a little while to grasp this concept fully. The game is suspenseful and fun for kids.
The drawback with this version of Battleship is pretty common to a lot of products. The manufacturer has done a lot of cost reduction to the game since you saw the version you played on as a kid. There is a lightweight and cheap feel to it now. One example is the white/red pegs. They used to be large, about 2cm and solid. Now they are about 1/2 cm and hollow to save on plastic cost. Just one example, but you get the idea, everything about it has been spared down to the minimal possible costs. They even have the user apply the outside Battleship decal stickers to save on a few pennies of assembly cost. This sort of makes sense. They are selling the game based on nostalgia we all have for it that we want to pass on to our kids. This games sales driver is not word of mouth on high build quality or durability. Therefore, charge as much as possible and cut costs at every conceivable location. To this I would say to the manufacturer, shame on you guys.
A better bet would be to find an older battleship game with better quality on eBay or go dig up your old set from your parents basement. Those sets were built so well that they should still be fine.

We ordered Chutes and Ladders for our four year old. He enjoys the game, but there are a few things that we don't like.

1.The child needs to be able to visually recognize the numbers 1-100, so that they know where to move. If your child, like ours, can't do this yet it becomes frustrating with having always to tell them where to move. It feels like you are playing for them. So, we play lots more Candy Land that Chutes and Ladders. So, this game probably isn't good for preschool children - unless you are willing to give them considerable help (which means no games played among just the children themselves).

2.The game pieces are made of cardboard that fits into little plastic stands. After several times of putting the cardboard into the stand the cardboad becomes compressed and will no longer stay in the stand. So, you will need to try to leave the stands on all the time, or you'll have to glue the pieces into the stands. Considering how classic a game this is and that families will play it for generations and hand it down, it would have been nice if they could have come up with better pieces (like the nice plastic pieces in Candy Land's anniversary edition).

3.In the last row of game play there are three chutes with only a couple of spaces separating them, which makes it VERY difficult for anyone to win and the game to be over. This gets annoying after a while and frustrating to little people.

So, we like this game, but it isn't our favorite. Be aware of your child's ability to recognize numbers and handle game frustration.

Ready, Set, Play!
The mission of Bakugan game play is to battle against other Bakugan to win the points awarded on the cards by getting your Bakugan to land on card. Players will love pretending to be one of the various characters in the show, such as the fiery 12-year-old leader "Dan" or the wise "Marucho," and they gain a deeper understanding of the cards and warriors as they play.

The Bakugan Deka doesn't come with instructions. The Starter Pack and Battle Pack both have instructions, however, so if your child is a newbie, it might make sense to get one of these first. You can also consult the Bakugan Web site, which does a good job of explaining the different types of cards and warriors. The game itself is fairly straightforward but if your child has never played before, you might have to help him or her to understand the rules -- after reading and understanding them yourself.

The bad boys of the Bakugan world, the Dekas are bigger and even more fun to play with than the standard Bakugan. Almost as large as a softball, but much lighter, the bigger, beefier Dekas add a new dimension to Bakugan play. Though not pocket-sized like the other Bakugan, your child will still love battling with the Dekas and collecting the different warriors.

Exciting Magnetic Action
The Bakugan come in lots of colors and varieties that make them fun to collect and trade. Most of them are pocket-sized and easy for your child to carry around and bring over to their friend's houses. The Dekas are are much bigger than the standard Bakugan, but still lightweight. Having a magnet that activates the warriors is a clever idea that adds excitement to the game. The optional Bakugan Launcher (sold separately) is a great accessory, with three shooting modes ("curve," "angle, and "distance"), but it doesn't come with any instructions.

Room for the Imagination
We like that this that this game combines skill (aiming your Bakugan) with strategy (placement of the cards). We also enjoyed the way the warriors pop open on the magnetic cards -- although sometimes they do it even when they don't land on the cards. Being unfamiliar with the TV show, we felt a little lost at first in the world of Bakugan. But with the help of the colorful, animated Bakugan Web site, we got the gist of what the game is about and how to play. Our attempts to fire the launcher proved somewhat difficult and instructions would have helped. But the launcher isn't necessary. Kids can simply roll the Bakugan like marbles for a fun and action-packed game with their friends.

Creating Art with Light
The Glow Station is a flat, smooth surface made from glow-in-the-dark, light-sensitive material. It was easy enough for us to set up: the Glow Station is designed to hang from a nail or hook on the wall. Just make sure that it's in a room that can be completely darkened. Install three AAA batteries in the light wand, and hang the stencils and other accessories from the Glow Station's pegs to keep them in easy reach. We did have to manipulate the Glow Station a bit by rolling it -- you could also place it under a dictionary -- to make it stay flat, as it comes folded in the packaging. If you're traveling, or you don't have a convenient place to hang the Glow Station, it works just as well laid flat on a table or the floor; you just won't be able to store the accessories on it.

The light wand is shaped like a large pen and has a small light bulb at the tip. Use the light wand to "draw" on the Glow Station canvas to create artwork that glows brightly from the light-activated canvas. The darker the room, the more brightly artwork glows against the canvas surface.

We found that drawing "freehand" with the light wand renders pleasing, softer-edged images; for crisper, well-defined images, use the stencils to create shapes and scenes, such as animals safaris or solar systems. The stencils can be used with the "textured sheets," which are printed with opaque designs -- stripes, feathers, spots -- to give cool detail to the images. We had great fun, for example, peppering the canvas with a herd of spotted giraffes, all made with a stencil and textured sheet. The light wand also comes with a "crystal" attachment that causes the light to refract, creating rather beautiful starburst patterns when applied to the Glow Station canvas.

Be Original!
For kids who want to make their own, original designs, the Glow Station comes with a plain, clear acetate sheet and a dry marker. Artists can draw their own pictures and designs on the sheet with the dry marker, then hold the sheet against the canvas and trace over it with the light wand. The acetate sheet is easy to clean with a dry cloth for easy re-use.

Artwork lasts for about 5 minutes, during which it will gradually fade away completely -- leaving room for creating all over again. This also creates the unavoidable drawback of being unable to save the glow-in-the-dark masterpieces. But then again, it's comparable to other works of childhood artistry -- sandcastles and snowmen, for example -- which have perennial appeal despite their temporary quality. And watching the pictures fade away is actually part of the artistic process.

A Great Gift that Kids Love
I bought this game for my children several years ago on the advice of the owner of my favorite toy store. I love board games, and my children were 3 and 5 then, and just starting to enjoy them as well. Well, we couldn't get the kids to stop playing Zingo. They played quietly for more than 2 hours. Since you can play with up to 8 players, we have had lots of neighborhood kids playing the game out on the front steps. Right out of the box, this scaly pet D-REX feels more authentic than most other dinosaur toys on the market. His rubbery, reptilian skin is loosely stretched to accommodate movement, and he has a slightly strange texture that is soft to the touch. While his oversized feet and a fun spiked collar balance his menacing teeth and his darting yellow eyes, he is still a little scary looking. Don't worry--you'll soon discover that he has a sense of humor and a soft spot for anyone willing to scratch the back of his head.

Before you start getting to know D-REX personally, you'll need to use a Phillips screwdriver to insert five "C" batteries in his tail and two "AAA" batteries in the bone-shaped controller. Once he's powered up, D-REX is ready to start showing off and responding to his surroundings. He'll roar, turn his head, and blink his eyes.

Cool Robotics Technology for Interactive Play
When you pet D-REX on the head, touch sensors let him respond with an appreciative roar. If he seems hungry, you can stick something in his mouth and he'll chomp away on it. And the bone-shaped controller lets you prompt five different types of behavior. Press "attack," and he'll launch forward while roaring. Press "prank," and he'll fart, burp, or roar. In seek mode, he uses a noise sensor to locate you and walk towards you. Due to the room's background noise, we found that he had some difficulty with this task. But it was funny (and kind of cute) when he bumped into walls and backed away in surprise.

Perhaps our favorite mode was "guard." In this mode, you can set D-REX up in front of your bedroom door or your favorite toys and he will scan the room, letting out a big roar if he detects the motion of "intruders." There's even a question mode that lets you replace your out-dated magic eight ball with dinosaur wisdom. Each time you press this button, D-REX will answer a question by nodding "Yes" or shaking his head "No."

D-REX is programmed to respond as a pet with an independent mind. This means that, despite his five-button remote, he won't walk where ever you want him to. Kids who expect to "drive" him around the room like a remote control car may be disappointed, but we actually enjoyed this fact a lot, since it made him more realistic. And we expect that kids who are fascinated by either dinosaurs or robotics will agree with us on this. As an added bonus, D'REX offers a battery-saving sleep mode, which parents are sure to appreciate.

I bought this game for my sons 5th birthday thinking it'd be a lot of fun to play and he could play with ease. Imagine the disappointment he and I both felt when it didn't work. The car counts the spaces as you move it, however it didn't always register the spaces.. sometimes I could move 4-5 spaces and it'd only count 1, and sometimes I'd move 1 space as told and it'd tell me to move back 3. We returned it and got a new one hoping it was just a defective one, but no, the second one was just as horrible. We returned it and are looking at other games for him now.

AWESOME!!! I bought this game to advance my 2nd graders from the classic SORRY! game they have always loved. This version has added an exciting twist and skill to the board that keeps them interested and certainly in great competition. They love the excitement of how much their score can change throughout the game based on how pawns slide onto the game baord and bump into other pawns. The concept of scoring was easy for them to understand yet challenging enough for keeping track of each round. They certainly enjoyed the familiarity of the SORRY concept and most excited about the variation capabilities in this set. Another feature I did not expect so much excitement from was the pawns. Every player gets 8 pawns, 4 tiny ones for scoring and 4 "sliders" with steel balls inside them. The rule is one tiny pawn to a large sliding pawn. To teach them the relation of scoring, I let them know that every big pawn has ONE "buddy" (little pawn)..and that they stick together throughout the game.
The game is very well constructed. I use alot of games in teaching and this is impressive! Don't hesitate! You're FAMILY will love this one!

LEGO Mindstorms NXT

Impressive evolution for MindStorms

My NXT set just arrived by FedEx this afternoon. I'm a parent of two (6 and 3-year old) so this is mainly for me for now. I was an early adopter of the first generation of Mindstorms, so naturally I pre-ordered the NXT. I've played with it for two hours, so these are my initial impressions:

- the new motors are Wonderful -- they work as motors or servos (you tell them which angle to go to). They look futuristic and robot-y

- it comes with an ultrasound distance sensor -- whoa that's neat!

- All of the sensors are "slick-looking", and seem to work very well.

- the brick display is quite nice, but the interface is a bit niggly. Lots of nested menus. My 3 year-old managed to delete the built in demo program by button twiddling. It was easy to restore, though.

- the box itself (the "out of box experience") is disappointing. You have to punch out some quarter-circles to allow it to hinge, but they're poorly serrated, so the tears come out ugly. The inner boxes are hard to open so you end up messing those up. In short, the previous mindstorms box was a great long-term storage solution. This one is going in the trash. As a first impression, it's pretty poor.

- back to the good: there's a "quick-start guide" that gets you building a simple robot that is run by a built in demo program. It's perfect: not difficult, but not trivial -- it makes noises and moves around. The kids were enchanted.

- the "powered by LabView" programming environment seems halfway between the nerd-y LabView system that you could buy from Dacta and the totally bozo thing bundled with the old Mindstorms. It doesn't have that "rocket scientist" feel of the old LabView environment, which is both good (it's more self-guided) and bad (I don't see how to zoom out so that I can see complex programs all at once, for example.

All in all, this thing is very impressive, has lots of staying power, and since it supports MacOS X, I'll actually use it, and will most likely pull out my old MindStorms and combine parts. Thanks, Lego -- keep up the great work!

I was not a Lego Star Wars Fan until I found a display in Toy'rus. They have a display full of the clones (I would say, 100+) in a palace. I was amazed with the visual effect on this display and I fall in love with the Lego Star Wars figures at the moment.

This box set comes with 4 of the clones figure. If you only buy a box or two, you may find it interesting to play with. I personally bought over 10 box now and I have about 40 of the clones now. It's a great display for any Star Wars Fan, more over, I feel very satisfy with the visual effect it provided when I group them together with their ships.

LEGO Clone Troopers Battle Pack 7655

Battle packs rule!
My 7 year old son loves his Legos star wars kits. He's got a bunch and the battle packs mate well for scenario play with them. Legos has been promoting the battle packs in the Legos club magazine so the odds your your kid already knows about the battle packs and wants them. No matter what Star Wars Legos kits s/he has this will augment it.

The Battle Packs are worthwhile as stand alone toys too - especially for travel. The trouble with the big Legos kits for take along play is that they tend to break up in pieces during play and a lost piece is a disaster. The Battle Packs are small and simple (and cheap). These can go with you. They are the correct size for making an airline seat back a battlefield. Heartily recommended.

LEGO Droids Battle Pack 7654

Great for a droid army!

This wave of Episode III sets is definetely better then the first. I pickep this upat Target today along with a General Grievous Starfighter and a Droid Battle Pack, all of which have been great.

This setcomes with 7 droids, 3 super battle droids and 4 battle droids. The Super Battle Droids are slightly delicate. The joints on the arms are too small, and widen when you place them on the body. I would definetely be careful with these, the joins can get loose easily, the ones I got with my Episode II republic gunship actually broke. The standard Battle Droids are what you would expect. No real weak or strong points there.

Along with this you also get a speeder and droid transport hovercraft that easily fits 5 droids and a pilot. The speeder is nothing special. it's a little flimsy, but nothing that can't be but right back on in the rare occasion that something actually does fall off. The cruiser is just how it looks on the box, fitting a pilot, 5 droids, and two small blasters.

This set is truly worth the $10 you spend on it. You get 7 droids, a speeder and a transport hovercraft-type thing that is truly great for anyone building their own droid army. If you see a few of these in a store be sure to pick em up.

Ultimate LEGO Building Set

Fabulous set, need a few of them!
This is such a fabulous starter set for Legos. It has all the right "boy" parts in it including airplane propellers, race car steering wheels, etc. This set is very well loved in this house and has built everything from race tracks to helicopters. Great, great fun and provides HOURS of entertainment. If you are getting these for a true Lego afficionado, be sure to pick up a couple of them. It has quite a few pieces but to truly build a bunch of stuff, you'll need more. Wait for a sale, however, Easter and Christmas usually provides a great sale at the giant toystore with an r in the name. Watch Amazon too - they knock ten bucks off the price every now and then! Highly, highly recommend!

As my 14 month daughter works on getting the right shape in the right hole. This game is the best invention since chess, if you want to improve your child's thinking ability! When I taught gifted students in grades 2-8, they would beg to play it. Kids would say over and over, "It''s hard, but it's fun". I read that it is an activity where the right brain and the left brain work together. Do you like Scrabble but get hung up trying to use those special point squares, are bummed when someone "steals your spot", or dragged down by Debbie Dictionary ("just let me look up this one word") or Slow Joe (who takes 20 minutes for each turn)? Well you would love Bananagrams, because it solves those problems. There are no special squares (or squares at all), no points on the letters (all are worth the same) and no time to dawdle. You are instead rewarded for speed and flexibility in making your own crossword. You can completely pull apart your crossword and start from scratch if you need to or just swap out a letter here and there, but don't get caught with a bunch of spare letters when an opponent goes out!

It is exciting and challenging to play this game with adults, but it can be fun to include the kids. You can easily adapt the rules to suit yourself. We "handicap" the adults by drawing two tiles for every one the kids draw. You can play solitaire or have several players.

A similar game that I also love is Learning Resources' "Take Four". If you are the type who would prefer to have a grid to keep those tiles straight, or likes to have a few "jokers" thrown in, you might prefer this. But Banagrams is far more portable and much cheaper. I like both of these games so much (as well as the spelling card games Quiddler, My Word, and Tri-Virsity) that the old Scrabble board is gathering dust.

Great Product, Great Price!

his easel is a great buy! Very sturdy and high quality as most of mellisa and doug products. Colorful, kid friendly and easy to put together. Both the writing boards and the trays are adjustable for the height of your child. It folds up easy, but stands strong. This easel DOES have a place for a paper roll!! I did not think it did by the amazon description (I almost bought a more expensive one for the paper roll but decided to go with this and am so glad I did) ... the roll goes in the center between the boards and the paper comes up through the top and under a paper guide in front of the dry erase side. I can't image why you would spend more on another brand of easel, this one has everything I could think of wanting and is simple, solid wood, looks good and is super functional. This is the first review I have written, but wanted to pass on how happy I am with this product.

Good fun for our kids, with only a few minor drawbacks

Our kids and their friends have a lot of fun with this easel. I bought it with an "EXPO dry erase system" that fits nicely into the pouch beneath the easel, so they have extra pens, an eraser and some spray to make cleaning the white board easier. The product was fairly easy and intuitive to set up, though the instructions leave a lot to be desired (24 photo illustrations with no accompanying text).

The main drawbacks:
* The pouch beneath the easel is a lot more shallow than the pictures would indicate. There's only about an inch and a half to two inches of "lip", so our kids can't store many of their drawings there, like I'd intended. You could get a small plastic bucket for the space to hold items to make it more useful.

* The pens tend to fall out of the elastic holders on the easel's two side wings. As I mentioned, I got them an EXPO set that stores nicely under the easel. Our kids haven't utilized these side wings much at all or this would be more of a problem.

* The kids' only complaint is that the dry erase board is hard to clean. You'll need some spray to help with that.

* The seam down the middle of the white board is a bit annoying, as other reviewers have mentioned. Oddly our kids (8 and 12) don't seem to mind that much. Of course when they draw on the paper the seam appears in those pictures, too. If you think your child will not like this, definitely buy a different easel.

Redesign suggestions for RoseArt:
1) Add more fabric to the front section of the pouch beneath the easel to make the space more functional.
2) Make the white board a solid piece and give it its own carrying case. It wouldn't add to the overall weight, and the money spent on a little extra fabric and a different shipping container might be saved by not having to machine apart the two pieces. I'd be willing to pay a couple of extra bucks to fix this, which is really the biggest flaw of the product.
3) Take a few minutes and have someone come up with better assembly instructions. My husband and I are pretty bright but got stuck partway through because the next step was not very clear.

Super fun at a small price
So many "thinking" games these days cost big bucks, but not SET! It is basically a pattern recognition game, but MUCH more fun than "pattern recognition game" sounds. My family loves to play SETGAME, and, as others have noted, five year olds can play on a par with adults.

I also love the portability of the game - it's good wherever you have to wait, the dentist, the Drs. office, etc...

And I also love the fact that you can lose cards and STILL play the setgame. Our deck is probably 5 cards short but still going strong.

I highly recommend this setgame.

However, I would suggest to anyone that if they find that their child has enough teeth to break through the plastic and find that their child continually chews through the product that they discontinue use. No toy should be teethed on to the point of damage as small bits could break off and pose a choking hazard.
